Day 2- Sintra to Ericeira and Surfing

After a quick sketch over coffee in the main square in Sintra we left town, shocked by the high prices that the shops  and bars were charging in the centre.

We liked Sintra, and its a beautiful, fascinating place (complete with dinosaur footprints and a labyrinth, and is a pagan centre).

The route out of Sintra was easy, and the first few km were downhill. We followed the N247 which is not too busy and entertaining with up and down rolling hills, good leg exercise, warming up for the rest of the trip.

We stopped at Ericeira for a late lunch. Ericeira is one of 4 World Surfing Reserves (with Malibu and Santa Cruz in California, and Manly Beach in Australia). We were really charmed by the mix of fishing village, surf and family holiday spot and decided to stay and surf. We found a surf shop in the centre and they recommended a hostel nearby, and a surfing lesson at 5:00!!!

Matadouro is flanked by two lines of rocks where the swell breaks creating waves. Luckily for us beginners, the sea was tranquil, so we enjoyed an easy session with a our very regimented surf trainers.

To get to the break point  you had to queue to get into the wave, like a conveyor-belt.

A sketch, dinner and an early night (despite the concert and evening entertainment going on in the next square) we departed early next morning towards Obidos, the interior again, with the wind from the Atlantic on our left until we said goodbye to the coast and headed into the rolling hills.
